Engineered Wood vs Laminate Flooring in Costa Rica

Real-wood warmth or maximum scratch resistance? Here’s how the two compare for Costa Rica’s humidity, traffic and budget.

Quick answer: Both are premium floors we proudly supply and install — the right choice simply depends on the space. Engineered wood offers the warmth, natural grain and prestige of real hardwood; premium laminate is exceptionally scratch-resistant, hard-wearing and versatile. In Costa Rica’s humidity, engineered wood shines in climate-stable interiors, while laminate (or the Modular One Hydron hybrid) excels in high-traffic, rental and moisture-prone spaces. Tech Deck & Flooring supplies and installs both as the exclusive Parador distributor in the country.

Two of the most popular premium flooring options in Costa Rica are engineered wood and laminate. They can look similar in a showroom, but they are built differently and behave differently in a tropical climate. This guide breaks down the real differences so you can specify the right floor for your project.

What’s the actual difference?

Engineered wood

Engineered wood has a genuine hardwood veneer bonded on top of a stable, multi-layer core. You get the authentic look, grain and warmth of real wood, but the layered core makes it far more dimensionally stable than solid hardwood — an important advantage in a humid climate. Depending on the veneer thickness, many engineered floors can be lightly sanded and refinished once, extending their life.

Laminate

Laminate is a high-resolution photographic décor layer protected by a tough wear layer, pressed onto a high-density fibreboard core. It is not real wood, but modern premium laminates reproduce wood convincingly and are extremely scratch- and dent-resistant. Parador’s premium laminates add a corundum-based wear layer, SurfaceONE™ anti-scratch treatment and NK33 commercial rating for high-traffic use.

Which is right for your Costa Rica project?

Choose engineered wood if…

  • You want the authentic look and feel of real wood as a design statement.
  • The space has stable indoor humidity (air-conditioned or well-ventilated interiors).
  • You value the option to refinish the surface once over its life.
  • The floor is for master suites, living rooms or design-forward residential projects.

Choose laminate if…

  • Scratch and dent resistance is the priority — pets, kids, rolling furniture, high traffic.
  • You need a more accessible price point without giving up a premium look.
  • The property is a vacation rental with intensive, intermittent use.
  • You want fast, tile-by-tile plank replacement if damage occurs.

How Costa Rica’s humidity changes the decision

The single biggest factor in a tropical climate is moisture. Engineered wood is far more stable than solid wood, but it is still real wood and performs best where indoor humidity stays reasonably controlled and the material is acclimatized on-site for 48–72 hours before installation. For bathrooms, kitchens, mudrooms, coastal properties or any space with real water exposure, we recommend stepping up to Parador Modular One Hydron — a rigid hybrid floor that is 100% water-resistant for 100 hours (ISO 4760) while still delivering a premium wood look. Frequently Asked Questions

Is engineered wood suitable for Costa Rica’s humidity?

Yes. Engineered wood’s multi-layer core is far more dimensionally stable than solid hardwood. With controlled indoor humidity and proper on-site acclimatization (48–72 hours), it performs well. For high-moisture rooms, we recommend the Parador Modular One Hydron hybrid instead.

Which is more scratch-resistant, engineered wood or laminate?

Laminate, thanks to its corundum-based wear layer. Parador premium laminates add SurfaceONE™ anti-scratch treatment and an NK33 commercial rating. Engineered wood’s scratch resistance depends on its surface finish and is generally good but not as hard as laminate.

Can engineered wood be refinished?

Many engineered wood floors can be lightly sanded and refinished once, depending on veneer thickness — extending their service life. Laminate cannot be refinished; damaged planks are replaced individually thanks to the click-lock system.

Is laminate waterproof?

Standard laminate is surface water-resistant but not waterproof at the joints. For bathrooms, kitchens or coastal humidity, choose a rigid hybrid such as Parador Modular One Hydron, which is 100% water-resistant for 100 hours per ISO 4760.

Which is better for a vacation rental in Costa Rica?

For rentals, laminate or the Modular One hybrid is usually the practical choice: higher scratch and moisture tolerance, a more accessible cost, and fast individual-plank replacement between guests.

Do you supply and install both in Costa Rica?

Yes. As the exclusive Parador distributor in Costa Rica, Tech Deck & Flooring supplies and installs engineered wood, premium laminate and the Modular One hybrid — with samples, technical guidance and installation by our own teams.
